LOWELL -- Sharon Shelton of Lowell described a dinosaur statue with a sign that reads "Locavore."
The "Locavore" will be featured at the 28th Lowell Farmers' Market starting tomorrow at JFK Plaza.
"We want everyone to come over and be a locavore," said Shelton, manager of community relations of Community Teamwork Inc.
The market aims to create "Locavores" by selling locally grown produce.
"We are trying to grow and get people interested in local food," said 26-year-old Matthew Himmel of Lexington, a managing farmer. "Your food is not traveling as far and is therefore more sustainable."
Along with local produce, the market will also feature foods from Southeast Asia and Africa.
Mayor Edward "Bud" Caulfield will help kick off the season at the market tomorrow.
The market will also feature the new Artship Enterprise, an arts and crafts mobile for kids, and cooking demonstrations by Tom Shanahan, co-owner of the Four Sisters Owl Diner.
Himmel said he believes the market makes farming on a small scale financially possible.
The market will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. every Friday until Oct. 17. Sellers at the market will accept WIC and Senior Market Coupons.
